What is Sinusoidal Run Rhythm?
Sinusoidal Run Rhythm, or "SRRhythm" for short, was created as a collaboration with the composer Steffen Krebber. It is an implementation of a new theory of rhythm he has created by the same title. It is often said that the quality of an algorithm is the ratio between the simplicity of a formula and the number of real-world phenomena it can recreate or approximate. By this measure, SRR is of the highest caliber: from a simple mathematical model, it generates microtemporal rhythmic grids that are not only strikingly groovy, but also offer a distinct interpretation of metric structures - structures that can be found in diverse musical genres from all over the world.
Our version of SRRhythm extends Steffen's formula, to be able to control other sonic dimensions besides amplitude, so the same wave patterns can be mapped to panning, binaural-offset, and filter cutoff modulation. These can be used individually or in any amount of combination through their respective knob. These amounts and the use of the mix knob, allows you to capture anything from a drastic tremollo effect, to subtle warble or filtering, and anything in between.
We've also added cross-plugin-instance synchronization, so you can keep rhythms and other parameter groups consistent between multiple copies of SRR in your track. This setup can form the basis of complex performance setups, where rhythmic groups can morph together in real time, from pattern to pattern. Many artists are finding ways to utilize the "rhythm-space" of SRR, and navigating through it during live performance. We look forward to seeing how the community responds to this new tool and algorithm, and what ways you find to use it. Thank you for participating in the experiment.
