Downcast is a perfectly reliable and easy to use podcast client. I’ve been wanting to make playlists where I could group together all the podcast episodes about a certain subject in The Rest Is History and similar podcasts, where episodes about the same subject follow each other in sequence. It’s very hard to do that in Downcast. That’s not a fatal flaw, but I do consider it a flaw, and I might have to switch to another client.
Allows for more customization than any other app I’ve tried. It just works and has worked well for years. The feature I appreciate the most is the ability to bypass ads at the start and end of podcasts by setting when the podcast should start and stop playing (e.g., skip the first 1:05 when playing the podcast) both globally and for individual podcasts. The UI (visually, not organizationally) could use an update, but it’s an app for listening, so not a big deal
I’ve loved Downcast for many years. The control over downloading and retaining episodes, with overrides for individual podcasts, is great and easy to use. I just wish it had a queue!
This is my go-to app for listening to podcasts. I love this app because of what it does well, allows me to find old episodes as well as new ones, to keep organized. I love it even more for what it doesn’t do. It doesn’t make a lot of suggestions of what it thinks I might like, it doesn’t compete for my attention. Simple. Perfect.
I’ve been using this podcast app for many years and it is the best one for me by far. Tons of great features. Works great with CarPlay.
I’ve been using this app exclusively for podcasts since 2017 and it’s so good that I’ve never once even thought about using something else. It’s well worth the price.
the program is awesome. It a ton of settings. Be careful when changing things or you might might not have it work the you want it to. It is still the best podcast program in the apple universe.
Why other podcast apps don’t have playlist function is beyond me but is where Downcast really shines. This app is vast and very customizable (maybe too customizable sometimes). The UI is a bit clunky at times but the functionality is by far the best I’ve found. I’ve been using for years and plan to continue. Moreover, I don’t want an algorithm telling which podcast I should listen to next.
Been using this app almost a year. Got tired of Spotify and their ads. Now the only ads I hear are the ones actually designed to be in the podcast by the podcaster. I love that it downloads the pods to my phone so I can listen even in places with no internet. Like an airplane or when driving in rural areas. Thank you!
I appreciate all of the many features that Downcast allows one to personalize podcast playlist, and other settings. I had been using stitcher for years, just because it was easy to access online besides in the iPhone app, but they recently closed. The only question questions I have are around linking my MacBook Air Downcast with the iPad Downcast in the cloud. It would be cool if they were synced. However, I am worried my iCloud will lose too much storage if the podcast go to iCloud. There is pr
The granular control of media handling puts podcatching apps like Apple’s to shame. For instance, most podcasts I’d like to keep all un-played episodes but the continuously updated ones like NPR News, ABC’s news I only want the latest unplayed episode to be kept, no problem. Video podcasts will play audio only in the background so you can still play without distracted driving. Different speeds for each podcast feed if wanted.
I used for years but I’ve been using podcasting 2.0 apps, I wish downcast would implement!! Also it still loses place when I return next day. Podcast will be minutes earlier up to 30 minutes
I’ve used Downcast for years, but it’s becoming stale as Podcasting 2.0 features are being released on other more advanced and feature rich apps which is forcing me to change to a different podcast app. Please update Downcast to do podcasting 2.0 features such as the Live tag, comments, streaming sats (bitcoin) to support content creators, boostagrams, etc!
I used for years but I’ve been using podcasting 2.0 apps, I wish downcast would implement!!
Downcast has been my go-to player for podcasts for many years. I love it because it it simple to use. I don’t need or want all sorts of controls, I just want to hear the podcast. If you want easy, Downcast is for you.
It’s a very easy and intuitive way to organize and listen to my podcasts.
By far the best I’ve found and I’ve tried a LOT. Actually the only one that behaves as I intuitively think it should.
I’ve been using this app since it was created, and I’ve yet to find one better. The simplicity of the app, along with customization options, have made this my favorite way to listen to podcasts. I’ve tried different apps, but they all had drawbacks and required concessions that added too much frustration. Downcast seems to be overlooked on all the top ten lists, and I don’t understand why, it nicely fulfills all my needs without unnecessary distractions. Love this app!
After several years I’ve decided to stop using this app because of one issue. I have the app configured to download via WiFi only. Often find that a podcast episode is incomplete because my playlist completes an episode and stops because an incomplete download is next in the queue. This then breaks the continuous play loop until I reset the app several times. I’ve found a different app that doesn’t add episodes to a playlist until they’ve downloaded. So my continuous listening isn’t interrupte
Perhaps the least invasive of podcast apps for tracking (at least ones that do video). But very unreliable. Just started the app and splash screen shows for >40 sec. Force quit, same. Finally after three quits and waiting about 60 second the app opened correctly. Video And the UI is a hot mess. Incredibly difficult to find different features. Unintuitive. Needlessly complex and undiscoverable. Video playback out of sync with audio when sped up. App feels like 2012 not 2022.
You may not know it yet but you really want this awesome app! Has everything you need and great support. I’m surprised Apple has purchased them and just incorporated it into their iOS. Love this app!
Highly customizable. Frustrating that episodes often get “Queued for download” status and then they won’t download.
Well organized. Can make play lists and choose priorities. Can also set what to download and keep. Can lock episodes & stream. Amazing
Trying to adjust the volume with the on screen control just skips the track forward or backwards.
I’ve been using Downcast for probably 11 years and for me it’s the best iOS podcast player there is. I really appreciate having several forward/backward playback controls.
Thanks; have used for years, works very well I too would like larger captions for reading in car
If it didn’t keep crashing, it would be the very best podcast player. But, sadly, the crashes are there.
I’ve been using downcast for years, and find it is materially better than the default OS related offerings. I’m very happy with it and would strongly recommend it.
I’ve had DownCast for over 3 years and it’s always been solid. So many other apps have a horrible front end and want you to pay monthly/yearly. I bought this for 3 or 4 dollars 3 years ago and it’s been great ever since.
I can’t live without this one. It allows me to listen to podcast my way.
Getting many “error downloading “ messages on various podcasts since the latest software update.
I’ve used Downcast for many years. Love the interface and how the app works with a wide range of controls on headphones, earbuds, and automotive systems. I really value the ability to backup all my media on my iPhone. Those files are them backed up everyday when my phone is backed up to iCloud. I have long, carefully constructed playlists of programs and podcast series. Before Downcast, I wasn't always able to redownload them after a phone upgrade.
If you listen to podcasts, you should be using Downcast. I understand some other apps might look better, but Downcast has a better grip on how people listen to podcasts and sets the app up this way. I've stopped listening to podcasts that don't offer their feed on Downcast
Best podcast app to organize your podcasts and choose the order you want to listen to them.
This is the best podcast player there is. Simple to play and learn
No podcast app has everything I’m looking for but this comes closest. Easy to add feeds, excellent management.
This is my favorite podcast app because it is the most configurable of any I’ve tried. Particularly the features that allow you to group and sort.
I’ve been a user of this for many years, I love how easy it is to organize playlists and find new podcasts! It’s a great app!
I love podcasts to learn new ideas while I'm on the move and resting. Downcast has been my companion for 4 years everyday. No glitches, I love it.
I have an iPhone that has bad storage. After I download about 20 episodes(a relatively low number) my storage was full and the app offloaded and wouldn’t on load again.
I have been using this for many years now and see no reason to change, simple to use and not stuffed with bells & whistles. I’m over 70 and don’t have time to get bogged down trying to figure out how to use else.
The ability to set up custom feeds, fine-tune podcast priorities, etc, is wonderful. However, the interface is clunky and showing its age.
Best podcast player out there. Does not get the praise it deserves from the shills out there. Everyone always talks about Overcast, Castro, etc. I’ve tried most of them, even briefly subscribed to them, and I ALWAYS have come back to Downcast.
Podcasts App kept auto launching on my AppleTV. So switched to this. Was a great choice!
1 Negative User Reviews for Downcast
This could be a good podcast player if they fixed its complete inability to search for podcasts, and the inexplicable delay in getting new episodes. Or, perhaps they still feel the need to treat us like children with curated and “approved” podcasts only? Can we please just stop this?
