Thanks

It works. Some of the sounds could use some improvement but overall great

Pretty effective!

I wa a little bit worried how I would keep the katakana straight in my head since a lot are very similar. I found the stories Dr. Moku used for the similar characters actually worked. I did a once over on all the katakana then did a quiz just to see how much I remembered. I scored 9/10 first time around. I am really enjoying these apps as they are helping me learn pretty quickly. I recommend them to anyone learning Japanese as this stuff will help you build a strong foundation. I like how it als

Great App for Beginners!

Quickly learn カタカナ (katakana)! Works great as flash cards using the quiz options after you've gone through each character.

Japan

Very exciting and new way to learn. Love it!!!

Expensive

It's a great app, but it shouldn't be $3.99. I feel like it should be like $0.99 or $1.99. :/

Awesome!

Both this app and the hiragana app are amazing. Super easy to learn just by going through a few times whenever you’re waiting around. Absolutely worth the price.

Works great for me!

Everyone is different and learns in their own way. For me, I have found this app works well to study and remember all of the characters.

Amazing

Amazing app! I honestly learned Hiragana and katakana within an hour each. (One hour for Hiragana. Another hour for katakana). It was truly helpful and fun to learn. They even have a small update that lets you play cross word puzzles so you can also practice your Japanese and some vocabulary (there isn’t much vocabulary but it does get you started on learning).

It is a great app, but

Don’t get me wrong. The connect is wonderful. It truly helps you to learn Japanese. However, the apps requires a lot maintenance. Simple things like screen rotation and multitasking are not really implemented (just to mention a few). I agree that taken this into account the app is expensive. But I feel like you are paying more for the concept behind it than the app development.

Great Beginners App

I love the app but my suggestion is please add the option of viewing the missed characters after the quiz.

3 Negative User Reviews for Dr. Moku's Katakana Mnemonics

Dr. Moku's Hiragana App is Better

Some katakana look extremely alike. Dr. Moku's Katakana app uses "stories" in an attempt to get you to remember which is which, and it fails horribly. The stories are ridiculous and the pictures used are unattractive. A weakness of the Hiragana app is that its mnemonic pictures covered up the actual Japanese character, and it's WORSE in the Katakana app. Some of the characters are extremely hard to see. Do not buy Dr. Moku's Katakana. The Hiragana app might actually help, some of the mnemonics

The Hiragana app works pretty well

But the Katana app is horrible in my opinion. Instwad of using nouns to memorize words, it has you use names. For example, "su" is drawn as a nurse named Sue. The katakana for "su" is very similar to "nu", and by using the word nurse, it could get confusing. The only way to remember is by remembering the arbitrary name "Sue" by looking at the symbol.

Not worth the money.

While this app is a helpful and useful tool for learning the Japanese kana, it is not worth the money in comparison to other teaching resources. It would be more useful if you could pick and choose the specific kana that you need to review, rather than having to start from the very bottom every time. This app is just OK.
