45 Positive User Reviews for Mastodon
Big fan of the platform, I use the app every day, but the latest version re-jigged the active areas for boost, favorite, and reply, so now when I want to interact with a post, 95 times out of 100, it will just open the post instead. And the cycle repeats within the post itself, to I'm not entirely sure what arbitrary depth. Infuriating. I don't want to leave a bad rating for the app overall, but the latest version is an interactivity nightmare.
It’s not a bad app but literally no one is there so impossible to find someone posting anything I’m interested in
A minor gripe... the iOS Mastodon client tosses you up or down the timeline when you go back to it after reading the replies to a post. Maybe it is treating your scrolls down the individual post view as scrolls up or down the timeline itself...? Either way it is disorienting when returning to the timeline from an individual post.
After October 4 update the home button no longer jumps to top of feed and the app now auto loads to top of feed instead of last position. 2/5 until fixed. October 23 update “restored” Home button functionality with double tap, but the app still does not load on last position. If you close the app (not minimize/background), then next time you open it goes back to top of feed. This is annoying when trying to catch up on content but you start at the end of the conversations. 3/5 until this is fixe
It’s really hard to read this app as it’s constantly updating. There’s no obvious way to stop it which means if you’re partway through a post, then you have to take a break, too bad you’ll never see it again. Another problem is posting of images. Unlike some other apps, this one does not include text recognition so you have to retype everything otherwise alt-text Karens will complain. And finally when you upload pictures, my experience has been many times the toot just disappears and never arr
Fixes STILL needed 12/3/25: Scrolling is disjointed and fragmented. Scrolling at the bottom of the feed causes a weird refresh with new posts replacing the ones you just scrolled past. Making it impossible to keep track of your place. App freezes and cant be fixed without closing the app and opening again. 12/31/25 : Best way to refresh the feed is to close the app and open again.
I’ve enjoyed seeing the iOS app mature over the last three years or so, but am a bit disappointed we still can’t get to a functioning home button. This was a single click to get to top of feed, then a double click. Now I guess we scroll until we find it…
I’m running into a lot of UX glitches and errors. Like scrolling on profile page is broken. The header and feed scroll independently creating a really strange experience. No hate, I’m honestly just confused. I wouldn’t expect the official mastodon client to ship in this state.
I wish they’d focus on things working well before moving on. The interface is a bit janky, lots of visual bugs and the profile page often locks up or doesn’t read the swipe correctly.
As usual, the three dots used to block or mute a user are almost impossible to touch. In the version I just installed, neither mute nor block actually did anything. Also, what is the point of a huge “Filtered” screen for filtered posts? Literally an entire screen that says filtered. Ego thought that was a good design?
I like Mastodon, but I like this app better on android, then on iOS. What are the most important features is the blocking feature and I can’t get it to work in the iOS app. So I can use Firefox or another browser to block I can’t use this app. Until you fix this issue, I’m gonna go find another app or just use the browsers from now on.
My friends send me links in texts to Mastodon posts and the app loads when I click them. But it doesn’t bring up the post. Why set itself to handle Mastodon links if it can’t use them?
The app is functional in the sense that the user can execute commands and receive output from the app without having to manually create a specific instance but without having a guide on how to fellowship with other users it really serves no purpose. Could it be yet another example of a simple distraction from the powers that be or is it just a little bit more complicated than a typical user experience is used to. Only time will tell…
Good app when it works but lately more often than not it just indicates “Offline” and I have to use a browser. Killing and restarting the app or changing networks doesn’t help.
It has a good atmosphere. Free of extreme ads. Of course for now!
I love this app. It would be awesome if you could add reply, boost. To the rotor for Voiceover users this would allow us to swipe up and select an option. Thank you,
I’m on mastadon and I like it but for some reason I can’t post anything. As soon as I try to post anything I’m kicked out. There is apparently no way to communicate to get this issue resolved with them so I guess I’m just going to fade away.
I stayed away from using the Mastodon app and instead used other clients mainly due to a missing translate feature. Translation has been included in this release and it is great! At first I was kinda disappointed that you needed 2 clicks to translate a post (Options— Translate). However, later I realized that unlike other apps this option lets you see the translated text directly in your feed instead of needing to expand the text to see the translation. This is actually much better and I hope
When using this app and i turn my iPhone sideways the screen does not flip. This us not a big issue but many videos would be better viewed that way.
I’m having a problem with this bricking and freezing or crashing while I’m creating a post with a link in it. Hoping a new release fixes it
It’s kind of ridiculous that the official app doesn’t support viewing lists. Third-party apps have it. Just add the button at the top of the user account view alongside bookmarks, followed hashtags, etc. Otherwise a pretty good app. I bounce between this one and the web app I added to my home screen.
Great app. Simple, honest, and free.
...in so many ways for *new users*. It's a real shame, and it is nothing less than self-harm. Master now has this incredible opportunity to grow. It is like something out of 2005. Nothing but frustrating and counterintuitive. Five stars because it's a great opportunity and fills a void and has good intent. Zero stars for initiative, imagination, and common sense. Mastodon, please catch a clue. get help with your on boarding and new user experience. Or dwindle into a relevance. Now is your
But it is pretty good.
No weird billionaire saying crazy stuff here. It’s not bad.
Sharp, interesting comments from realistic folks. Don’t always fully agree but no hateful angry slurs if I say so. Also lots of topics shared.
Respect to the hard-working and generous folks who made this wonderful place for the rest of us.
I'm loving Mastodon and my only wish is that multiple devices would keep their last post seen in sync.
I’m a Twitter Refugee new to Mastodon. It’s slow (understandable given the exodus), hard to figure out which server to choose and harder still to rebuild my following and find my community to follow. Hopefully things get better.
Why it is still unable to show ppl and posts from other servers? I really want to meet more and more ppl on mastodon. Thx!
It would be lovely if this app could support switching between multiple accts from different instances. Also the cw tag takes the same space as the folded content block, instead of one line as how it is in the webpage version, making it less useful for people using cw to fold long text blocks in the timeline.
This app works as described and is relatively polished in most ways. Its design language is mostly consistent with the web app. Uninstalled because there are no settings to disable animations in timeline media. Not even a pause or stop button on the timeline itself. If someone shares a GIF or video, the only way to not see it play is to scroll it out of view. An incredible accessibility omission. Metatext is well maintained and provides a perfect superset of this app’s functionality. Includes
It’s nice to see the crew at Mastodon release a full-fledged native app. The only thing I hope they introduce is a way to change the text size. That would be awesome.
It happens to me quite frequently in multiple instances that emojis sent by others or myself are displayed as their codes
It’s a good app, everything works. Only thing missing is a federated tab, which really doesn’t make sense not having seeing what mastodon is.
The iPhone app works surprisingly well on macOS. But I'd love to see a full Mac Catalyst port!
There doesn’t seem to be any way to enter my email address or password to log into a server; there’s no keyboard displayed, only an option to scan text.
There is nothing to indicate the distinction of Fediverse from Home or Local time lines. Perhaps I am missing some hidden setting?
Until the official Mastodon app meets and exceeds the feature set of Metatext, it’s not worth it. Metatext feels very native, is performant, and has more features out of the box. Hopefully more to come. 🙂
Es una gran red social, la verdad es que es mucho mejor que Twitter por múltiples razones.
Great client! Come party on the peoples internet. Still room to grow. I use desktop web for DMs, posting with a lot of copy/paste, etc
It’s ok but if your mastadon instance isn’t listed you can’t login!
3 Negative User Reviews for Mastodon
Yes, Mastodon is ad-free and FOSS and all that, but even within the limitations those things imply, the quality of the iOS client is quite disappointing. Scrolling, transitions, and basic navigation are janky or even simply don’t work. Media uploads frequently don’t complete (this may be server-specific; I use mastodon.social). The web experience isn’t amazing but it’s at least competent, and is miles less frustrating than this app.
Main search page (“top”) only shows 20 or so posts. My personalized feed is worse and my engagement is down. No notifications anymore.
First off, the community on Mastodon is wonderful, and i'm very happy to be on the platform. That being said, this app is very laggy and broken at times. The easiest example is viewing profiles. There is something about the profile banner that lags my phone, and makes it hard to scroll anywhere past the first toot.
