11 Positive User Reviews for Modal Buddy

I'm a music teacher with 25+ years exp

I LOVE THIS APP and I encourage every student I teach to buy it. Even the non guitarists! Every musician should have a working knowledge of modes and this app is concise, linear, and very well done. Is it a complete fix for everything? Of course not but it is a fantastic starting point to get your students to start listening for chord changes. Before you run, you crawl. I'm looking forward to more keys in the future.

Modal Buddy

I think they really did a great job creating this app. The theory was explained in a very simplified way. I usually don't have time to studying music theory, but I did read through every section in the "Learn" part of the app. I am also spending a lot of time practicing with their backing tracks using the"Practice" feature. I actually think I'm becoming a better guitarist. All in all I would recommend this app to everyone.

Refreshing my studies

I like the app it makes me think again & is helping with improvising solos.Just wish it would rotate to horizontal on my iPad.Looking forward to the updates. Thanks again for hard work & asking for my input.Michael

Great learning tool!

Highly recommended. It's helping me out a lot. However I'd love to see more than one jam track per mode and more than just having the modes in G.

Decent, but overpriced

The backing tracks and the modal diagrams are helpful, don't get me wrong - but what you're really paying for is the time you'd spend finding them for free online. This is a $2 app, and even that is pushing it. Don't buy this app at full price. If I could go back and smack my past self before hitting "buy" I definitely would. Otherwise, it's a solid introduction to modal theory and I've found it helpful for identifying and fixing places where I need to improve.

Awesome with one minor flaw

I already know how to play in the modes, however this app is a fantastic tool because it is an excellent reference source as well as a learning and practice platform. There is one minor flaw though - it's an iPhone app so if you run it on iPad it can bug out a little bit - pressing the 1x or 2x button will freeze the app. Other than that very minor flaw this is definitely worth the time money and effort.

No more pentatonic

A minor was my go to and know this inside n out up n down the neck. After playing this n getting by I want deeply to go to the next level. YouTube was a bust as you get a small bit without the backing knowledge I spent cash on it loaded the app went over it a few times then started to use it. No after some time melodic scales come from modes and that was it. After using n practicing and memorizing and going back over this now is something that seemed so big but now it was really small and I use

Modal Buddy

Great app one drawback it needs to have a setting to add the intervals on the circles like the 1st 2 3 b7 etc. please add a setting

Thanks

I couldn’t figure out how to edit my previous review, so posting a new one. Thanks for updating the app to open on the iPad using iOS 14! Noting that if you could make it so it can rotate portrait to landscape like Beats, that would be even better! Thanks again for the quick update!

Only G major???

After all this time the app still only plays the jam tracks in one key (G major) and its corresponding modes. So if you want to practice soloing in Ab Dorian for example, you are just out of luck. Really stupid/lazy. I would have gladly paid for a wider variety of jam styles midis if the dumb app could transpose to each key. Without that feature the app is basically useless after a few uses.

Good but skimpy

1. Could use more examples 2. Should explain signature note for each node 3. Pretty thin for$5
