I like OnX. I use OnX Hunt and TroutRoutes app as well. I want to use Backcountry but I mountain bike primarily and the trails are not as up-to-date as they are on TrailForks. I wish they were so I could just use this app.
Just learning but looks like it will work for me
Easy app to use and shows so much of what’s around in the area! Started using it for hiking but also love that it has climbing and biking.
Love the app, overall just great. Could use a few updates, but it’s definitely nice to use and functional. Elite plan DEFINITELY is not worth it. Going from $29.99 to $99.99 per year just to see some info about private land? I see how that feature could be useful, but the price increase is way too lofty. Although there are a few more upgrades that one gets when purchasing elite, they aren’t easily noticeable, and still not worth it. Otherwise I personally love this app, and find it very useful.
Great app but did not continue the membership because when skiing or biking I do not have access to my phone. Would’ve continued if the app had a companion Apple Watch / smartwatch app for trail navigation
So much info about the trails, and the maps are awesome!
OnX had always been a super reliable company with very, if any, issues! I use OnX hunt, OnX off road and when I was into the snowmobiling and timbersled I used the OnX back country app, they're all amazing! Well done OnX!
Appreciate the versatility and tools that you can utilize in this app. The offline map feature is an absolute must have!
This has been a great experience using them! I’ve been a fan of theirs since they came out, even switching from another that I had been using. The ease of the app, and info is solid. I had an issue and tech support (Aaron) assisted me above and beyond what other apps give, and saved me some $$$. I also learned that each OnX app is catering to a specific niche, so look what ones you want. As I was told, it’s to intensive for all the data to be just on one app, hence the split up. Again can’t sin
I need to explore more on this App. Everything so far has been very easy to use and super informative. Seems like it will be my go to App from now on.
Work great with planning my MTB rides.
Pretty good app but owners of several Properties have not been updated for the past few years. That is unacceptable for an app that claims to keep themselves updated so you know who owns a property.
Great way to find routes and get there
I really appreciate so far how easy the app is to use. I have used other applications that were much more complex and I really appreciate that onX has full features while being very easy to navigate with.
Saw an ad for this app on Facebook. Said you could find dispersed camping spots on it. But it is not an option to find as a "layer", you rather must type "dispersed camping" in the search.
Bummer not for me😕
Enjoyed using this app more than any other app to location hiking trails and campsites
Super fun app that makes it easy to visualize routes with a lot of important data
Haven’t gotten lost since I found this app. Highly recommend!
Wonderful little app for all my outdoor adventures and travel.
Able to import KML files and save. Awesome app.
I've tried everything and there is literally nothing better than x backcountry.
Great app, very helpful tools, good image quality and I feel that the Price is reasonable. 100% recommend for any outdoor enthusiast.
Offers tons of details to make any journey a safe one. Thanks OnX! Also, shout out to Dan Becker who put me on
Not just your average gps / map! The clearly marked backcountry runs and uphill tracks make jt a must have resource for anyone exploring new areas.
I have tried using almost every app out there that provides a map resource, and always find myself coming back to OnX. It is by far the most reliable and user friendly system.
Great app I love the interface and it's easy to use.
OnX backcountry is the best hiking app in the world! Don’t risk your life with inferior apps.
Been backpacking for over 40 years And find this the best tool I have ever used
Great for seeing private and forest boundaries when exploring, love the hybrid mode with Topo and satellite…Customer service has been 100!
Offline maps work great Online maps work even better
For context, I haven’t purchased a membership. Since mountain project was merged with this app, it seems great to use as a climbing guidebook as long as you have service, but when I lose service I can’t access the content/pictures of any climb (on downloaded maps) which is the most necessary information besides the location. Does this change with a membership or will I still not be able to access pictures and descriptions offline?
I’m still trying to figure out how to use all the features but there’s a lot. lol
Great app! The rest are not even close.
This app is great. Love the interactive features of the map when I’m planning and executing in the backcountry. Also love the onX hunt maps. Game-a-changer.
Dope, offline maps, slope angle, slope aspect, and snotel data
So far it is a great app as more people use it, it will only get better
I’m finding this app great for my bushwhacking walks. Helps track distance traveled and find my way through rough terrain. I also can mark interesting places in the forest like good wild mushroom habitat and backwoods fishing spots.
5 Negative User Reviews for OnX Backcountry Hiking Trails
About half my saved trails have “Error Loading”, so I can’t see elevation data, trail reports, etc. Deleted and reinstalled the app, but same results. Also, elevation data isn’t available in Offline mode. Would really like to see this added, since it’s most mission critical when I’m offline (actually hiking).
Signed up for the one year plan, from a Facebook ad. Signed in, and answered all the questions to find that it wants me to sign up or upgrade again to be able to even see trails. What’s the point of the paid membership if it doesn’t give me trails?? Total joke. Waste of money and a waste of space on my device. Got ripped off. Thanks Facebook.
For a casual hiker seems kinda useless. It doesn’t include a lot of local trails that I use. Also didn’t have a trail I was looking for while visiting upstate New York. Had to use AllTrails again (Free btw). I like onX hunt but this app falls short of its usefulness for me.
I truly wanted to use this app as my main mapping / GPS app for all things in the mountains, but the app doesn’t offer 3D maps mode for downloaded offline maps. If 3D maps aren’t available for when you’re actually out in the backcountry using the app, why use it instead of other competitor’s similar apps that do allow 3D offline downloaded maps?
Other apps are easier and just as complete with data.
