18 Positive User Reviews for The Minnesota Star Tribune
Good, but
Two quirks that really detract from this app. First, there are times when I need to stop reading an article and simply allow my iPad to lock. When I go back to the article, I found that the app has moved me back to the front page section even if i don’t close it. Second, and, most annoying. Why do I need to log into some articles even tho I am logged into the iPad app???
Where is the Weather?
This app is a lot better than it used to be. But where is the Weather? Even before and during a major weather event, you have to go through the search function and use language from other news sources to find any reporting on the current event, and often nothing shows up or only old stuff. Why isn’t there a Section called WEATHER? Even if it only has one article a day in it, at least you could find it, and it would be current. Dumb.
Sports
It’s a shame with the new digital format that I cannot grab specific categories in Sports (ie, Twins, Vikings, etc.) to weed out stuff I don’t otherwise care for. On late Sunday (Aug. 4), the top item in all of sports — which I would expect to be the biggest news of the night, anywhere — was the Canterbury Downs results? Seriously? C’mon.
Also, what happened to the reader comments with stories? As a retired copy editor, I see errors in stories — to whom do I report? Best I can see, reporters’
New Format
Loving the new on line format.
This paper continues to sink
Sad to see my hometown paper loose its standards and commitment to quality. The app is like lipstick on a pig…
Frustrating
When I open the Strib it tells me to UPDATE. After hitting the green update sign I am taken to the App Store. There is not an option there to “update” only to “open”. This App has worked for me for years until recently, giving me references to “uodate”. I did perform an update the first time, I have even removed the App and reinstalled. What is the problem?
Glitchy
Week 2 of crashing…have updated app when instructed by Star Tribune but now a second weekend of snafus.
Dare we hope for a credit on our account? Nahhhh
Banner Ads, Bugs
The new version includes frequent interruptions with layover banner ads that you have to manually dismiss, whether you’re a subscriber or not. The app often crashes.
Love the paper, but…
Please please please make the app capable of zooming pictures. The app is for a phone-size screen, so expanding pictures is crucial for readers. Maybe it’s costly to do so. Not sure why it’s taking this long for this improvement. Thanks.

Potentially good
Super glitchy and sends you all over the place for articles. Too many ads.
Poor customer service
We are paying to get the paper on two devices and only receive it on one. Have contacted the customer service department a few times. No results. Definitely over priced.
Availability on the net
Very difficult to see the paper in the internet even though I have a subscription
Dazzling and annoying
The home page works well. Any entering stories opens windows that don’t stay open and are fairly full of ads. Search function is almost unusable as it returns wildly unrelated results. My particular peeve is finding horoscopes which is 3 clicks in only to have to repeat each time.
Want to like it but…
Great journalism, bad app.
For many articles, the Star Tribune app just opens up a iOS web window containing the article. Unfortunately this window doesn’t know whether you’re a subscriber or not so to use the app you have to re-login to your Star Tribune subscription - or else you hit the pay wall.
Often, though inexplicably, the login button there doesn’t work meaning even paying subscribers who go through the effort of re-authenticating multiple times a day, you still can’t see the article
Comments are gone
Suddenly the new version has no comments to read… often the best part in the sports and editorial areas. What happened?
Still not working
After updating and selecting “open” I got…. A blank screen.
What is it with news apps?
Hey how about when I click on the alert of a story, it goes to that story? Here’s another pie in the sky idea: a search bar that works??? Any search of a current story brings up old unrelated news from 2021. Is it just that the people at the top are old and don’t know how tech works? Whatever it is the UI of strib app is not great and that’s not news
