22 Positive User Reviews for The Atlantic Magazine

Everything but the magazine

All the articles they want to serve in categories they choose, but no ability to search or actually read the print edition online. The journalism is first rate. The app is a middle finger to the reader.

Great magazine annoying app

It can’t seem to remember me from day to day. I have to log in every time I use it despite being a subscriber.

Needs to open articles directly in app from email links

Nice enough when you’re in the app, but most of the time I’m launching an article from an Atlantic email and that takes me straight to the browser instead of the app I’ve downloaded and logged into. NYT doesn’t do this, it goes straight to the app to be able to save longer articles for reading later. Adds unnecessary extra steps and lagging, waiting for website to login etc, less engagement with the material.

Needs a distraction free reader mode

The one thing this app should do is make the viewing experience better than the web. In particular it should support a reader mode that lets me zoom the text as large as I want.

Awesome app - but can’t gift articles?

The Atlantic is awesome, everybody should know that at this point. My one complaint with the app is that you have to be in the browser version to be able to gift an article? As a subscriber, I would love to easily text a friend a gift article. Why this would not be available in the app is beyond me

Logs me out

When you’re a paying subscriber that mostly accesses through the app, it’s quite jarring when you click an article and a pop up tells you to subscribe. It’s not just the inconvenience of having to log in almost every time I use the app - it’s also getting the unsubscribed user experience that is irritating. There are many things to like about the app otherwise. It’s fast, saves your place in an article (even after being logged out ha), and I do like the curated page.

Ads

I’m paying for a subscription, I don’t want to also see distracting ads while I’m trying to read.

Great magazine, but app needs scrollbar

I love my subscription to The Atlantic, but I prefer reading articles on the website, even via mobile. That is because the app lacks scroll bars or other means to allow the reader to gauge remaining reading time. This is an unthinkable omission for a publication with such long and in-depth articles.

Fine app - way behind other news source apps

The Atlantic’s app doesn’t remember your place in the article you’re reading, which is an insane oversight considering the news sources they’re competing against. It’s very annoying.

Not fully functional

It’s just good for reading the articles. It’s a decent beginner effort, I expect more from a digital subscription. NYT app is a decent comparison (Also not great either TBH…maybe I’m just demanding…) I wish it were possible to gift articles from the app. Currently, You have to log into the Atlantic.com website. Search function is meh. I use it religiously so I won’t give it worse than 3⭐️⭐️⭐️ but I’d love to see an upgrade

App is broken after update

I love The Atlantic, but the app leaves a bit to be desired. Currently, the app appears broken. Articles don’t load (“forbidden” error message) and nothing shows on the Today page. I’ve tried signing out and back in, deleting and reinstalling the app. No change. When the app does work, there is no padding so text runs right to the very edge of the screen. I’ll take that over nothing. Please fix!

Lacks audio stories

Should have audio section and fast audio uploads of stories. Surprising thus isn't available yet.

SUGGESTED SUBSCRIPTION

Would love it if they had older years by the year. Or maybe week by week.

9 Negative User Reviews for The Atlantic Magazine

Signs me out every time I close the app

For multiple years I’ve been signing back in every single time I open the app. I put up with it because its good journalism and I do most of my reading on mobile. The only thing that’s gotten better is that now it takes slightly fewer taps to autofill my login information. The process is still clunkier than most logins. But you know what would be better than a less clunky login? Staying logged in for more than one article. The app is otherwise clean and usable.

Review the app, not the magazine

The magazine is great. The app is awful. I was so glad when they added search, but search doesn’t do anything. You can type in the entire headline of an article published two days ago and it won’t show in the results. If you click on the article on your feed somewhere else it doesn’t open your app—it takes you to the website and requires you to log in again. For heaven’s sake, I just want to read the content I paid for!

Can’t sign in on app

I’m unable to sign in on the app. It inexplicably logged me out (probably from an upgrade that wasn’t tested properly on your end). Extremely frustrated. I can sign in desktop with the same email and password I’m using on the app, but I get an incorrect username/password response on the app. Then when I try the ‘Need help signing in’ option, then I get the error ‘Can’t find any linked accounts….’ error. This needs to be be fixed as soon as possible. I doubt I’m the only user having this issue. A

Sometimes going blank

I’m reading an article and thoroughly engrossed and suddenly the page is blank and all the text disappears. I have to read it on Safari because the app is buggy and terrible.

Lately, a glitch

During the past months, the app has asked me to sign in. What used to be a rare occurrence is now happening every time I open the app. Please fix this. Content is excellent, as it has been for the 40 years I’ve been subscribed.

Disappointing

Unfortunately, this app that requires a subscription still shows ads which completely ruins the reading experience. Sad.

Does not manage iOS subscriptions well

I’m a paying subscriber through Apple subscriptions and once a month the app forgets that I have a subscription. Clicking “restore subscription” or logging in doesn’t work. I have to delete and re-install to get it working again. I find this infuriating. iOS is a mature platform and this app has been around for awhile. Yet they can’t seem to get this right. Every month—“subscribe!” Such a rude message when you’ve already paid and now have to troubleshoot a magazine before you’ve finished your m

Constantly Signing in and can’t save articles

Love the Atlantic, there are two frustrating problems with this app. (1) I am constantly having to sign in. It logs me out what feels like every day but is prolly at least once a week. I don’t have this problem with other (still secure) apps. (2) In the very old Atlantic app you used to be able to save articles for offline reading. I wish that option was still available and have found the removing of that ability to be a significant downgrade. Please fix both of these things! Thanks.

Saving articles

I like the ability to save articles. BUT when I’m reading an article they have Ads for unrelated articles and I can tap a flag to save them. But a related article that is linked from the item I’m reading can’t be flagged. Being able to do this would be a good way to save that important related article to read when done with this article. It should also have a method similar to the Kindle app to tap on a word and look it up.
