Ventusky: Weather Maps & Radar App Reviews

Long time subscriber to Pro Version. Best alternative for my realtime access to blended model data. Now that EM gutted NOAA/NWS staff by 30 to 40%. Local/tribal knowledge of terrain and history of weather patterns leading to possible danger? Only a memory now, not many boots left in the field these days.

Ventusky keeps evolving for the better. From choice of forecast models to interface, this has become my go-to app. I’m a CCM and, while retired, Ventusky is what I use for myself and family. Improvements? Please add precipitable water; then we’ll have all the information we need for intelligent forecasting.

After 2+ years, I am a satisfied customer. I live on the Texas Gulf Coast, so hurricanes are a big concern. I watch the African equatorial coastline and track the initial low pressure areas all the way west across the Atlantic and from the point that the disturbance becomes a tropical storm, the forecast zone is usually quite accurate and very accurate within 3-4 days of landfall. There are so many options to choose from. I love the satellite view and the air quality and precipitation map. Highly recommend this app!

This has helped us plan hikes, camping trips, outings when the weather is variable. The animations over time are great as well as the types of mapping. Only wish is that I could adjust the location more easily. I’m always telling people about it!

For a an enhanced weather app, Ventusky is what all, especially public safety, should have on their phones. The details are very helpful for real-time observations and it’s a bargain.

this thing is comprehensive, affordable and the most fantastic quick weather view of all the apps including windy, windfinder. i sail (great lakes) and power boat (gulf) and hunt and find the graphical interface easy to use and so much like star trek! beautiful and easy to digest with a glance. dive deeper like a freaky weather presenter? heck yeah, it’s all there.

Why does the data pointer’s little black arrow point inconsistently to “whatever”? There is no indication of what the direction it is pointing to means. And it can be pointing in the direction the wind is coming from, or, it can point in the direction the wind is going. Am I doing something wrong? Good app otherwise.

I love this app. Beautiful design, great weather information. Can’t believe it’s free. Unfortunately, I don’t need the features that would make the upgrade to subscription level worth it - I don’t like paying subscription fees for any app - but I would willingly pay a reasonable purchase price for what is provided here for free. Only improvement I would suggest is being able to fully collapse the daily weather info on the bottom and have the full screen available for the radar/wind graphics.

It is a good tool to have for supporting documentation.

It’s one of the best weather apps I’ve found since Weather Underground turned into garbage many years ago. Still, it’s awkward to use. There needs to be easier ways to set the current location and reset the view to “current time” after sliding into the future. The interface is design over function and is often frustrating. Again though, it’s better than 99% of the weather apps out there and at least isn’t owned by The Weather Channel or Accuweather…yet.

Love the app but the app no longer has the future projections available.

In the Midwest a person needs to know all aspects of current and future aspects of storms, wind direction, velocity, rain, snow, wind gusts, duration of event. It’s not enough to know “current conditions”, you better have some idea of what’s around the corner. Love the coverage.

There is not a better application for flying, you can see the big picture days in advance for that 4-5 day trip. This app is simply PERFECT.

All information we need wind, storms, tornado, rain, temperatures, pressure etc is very understandable. You can always find the best route for your safe driving.

I have come to love and rely on this app to help me through awful weather conditions. I was looking for something with long-range forecasts, and the forecast models on Vantusky are incredibly helpful. I despise subscription apps, especially for weather. This is so good, I would most certainly pay a one-time fee for it. Highly recommended!

This is the best weather information service I’ve ever seen or used and that’s coming from a person who was an international airline pilot for 30 years and is acquainted with weather services worldwide.

Love the app, but I have to delete and download it every time I try to open it. Otherwise, it will just flash and close. A major nuisance, but once open, it is outstanding.

I started using Ventusky after it was announced that Dark Sky was being discontinued. I like it overall, because it has pretty much all the weather information I want/need. I find the presentation a bit overwhelming, though. So MUCH info! The one thing I wish was front and center is the radar map view that shows where the rain is. I live in a rainy place and really appreciate the ability to quickly see the weather windows when I can get outside for a walk in between rainstorms!

This is by far the best source for accurate weather. I have only one request - allow me to change the names of Saved Locations. Reason - Example: entering any GPS coordinate within a large city such as Los Angeles uses “Los Angeles” for all of them. Also, your Contact Info does not include a form or email to reply.

I have turned on many of my friends onto this app because I love it so much,I don’t share things that don’t work and that are not comprehensive or accurate or effective. This app is wonderful and easy to use. I use it every time I go out especially if I’m boating or going to the beach because the wind can really impact those outings. I find this app a lot more engaging than many other weather related apps! Best money I ever spent!!

I love this app this is my most favorite one. Is there anyway you could put the lightning data on the world radar and have it for around the world even if it’s just lightning in the last hour I would pay more I still give it a 10 and look forward to new changes in the future. Can the animation of the frontal boundaries and positions in the models can they be a little smoother? Thank you.

I love the information you provide however I find your use of colors with the text and fonts to be substandard. First, one should be able to adjust the size of the font. Often I am trying to determine small black numbers on a dark background, like tracking wind speed on the ocean, or radar where water is dark grey. The numbers are a small, thin, black font. That makes the app useless. You should have a way to change that.

I frequently use Ventusky for boating and hunting. The graphics clearly show wind activity and other weather elements.

Very good weather app. I like the variety of options and the way it is displayed and the easy of use. I highly recommend it.

I had used the free version for a few years. I upgraded to the paid version a few months ago. Since the upgrade both on my phone and iPad, it freezes at the log-in screen every couple of days. I have to delete the app and download it again from the App Store. Then I have to reset all my preferences. Not sure which bug fixes were accomplished recently, but this instability bug should be the next one worked on. Otherwise, it is the best weather app available!

They go into the future and pretty much hit it right on, I’ve only seen a couple times that was a little off, but it’s hard to predict five days in advance, they do a great job.

We hike often long distance from any weather reporting points and Ventusky gives us the best information hands down.

This is probably one of the best lesser known weather apps on the market. The level of customization is amazing. A must have for weather nerds or someone who wants more than just the basics. The developers switched to a subscription model recently and handled it correctly by respecting users who purchased previously. Support is very responsive as well and their privacy policy is fair and respects the user.

I have used many many weather apps. I really like this one. Definitely worth the money!

Love looking at this app at the weather models, it is very useful, one recommendation I would say would make this better is humidity and dewpoint at different altitudes in the atmosphere. I wish they also had water vapor and it satellites. Other than that great app for forecasting.

Great Wx app. It’s better than the Wx Chanel. Can tell right where storm is going. My go to weather source. LOVE IT! I totally agree. As a prior/retired usaf aviator this is my go to source. Trust much more than “The W/X CHANNEL.”

I photograph and report on wildfires and Ventusky has become an indispensable tool in understanding conditions. I first saw it in the hands of a fire captain who was waiting for a major flame front to hit, and sure enough, like it said. Thank you.

Apple's Weather app is often wrong (especially about rain), and Ventusky has become my source of truth. Not sure why there is such a difference. It's 2022.

Used to be a wonderful “go to” for WX picture! Not now. Developers have added nearly all of the possible changes in view the screen, making viewing the WX picture a cluttered mess. It is beyond useful, and it’s certainly no longer a “clear picture”. I absolutely hate it, since I cannot turn off the most offending “choices” of the dreadful mess.
