15 Positive User Reviews for Whale Alert
New Update Improved!
I neglected to download this app before due to the bad reviews, but those were from a year ago and the app has updated since then.
So far it has worked smoothly in all aspects, the only thing is that so many whale watchers do not report on here and instead report to Facebook or through email newsletters and WhatsApp groups.
I hope we can have more accurate reports on here in the near future, particularly in Washington.
To the app developers, Thank you!
Great data, with usability issues
First: so appreciative for this free app. The data is uses is great, as is the ability to report through it. I’ve used it to stay aware of whales I’ve come across in the Puget Sound. After the most recent update, it seems the API call to get the whale sightings is blocking. You can’t do anything with the app on the first 15-30 seconds and when you try to move the map it freezes. A feature that allows you to filter by species or time seen would be great!

Good app but now crashing
On iOS 8.2 app crashes when opened
Marine restricted area
Keep getting updates saying I’m in a marine restricted area when I’m about 15 miles from the ocean.
Finally!
an app to track your mom
Anyone who hates on this app don’t see its future potential
Some of these reviews are made to taint this app’s worth. The cause is a start and this app is its representation.
All boaters need this!
Really important system to alert boaters to avoid endangered whales and submit their sightings. A must for anyone who works on the water!
So far…
I really love how this app is designed. Straightforward, not a lot of distracting and unnecessary elements. Definitely a few tweaks needed to really make it ultimately user friendly but it is by far the best one I’ve used!
Continues to use location well after closing the app
I like this app and check on my daily commute across Puget Sound, but it continues to use location services for up to an hour after I stopped using the app (and have been inland, well away from water. I have it set to use the precise location while using the app). Otherwise it’s nice to use and very informative concerning the whales and whale pods spotted along my commute.
Good but could be improved
This is a super helpful app for the whale enthusiast and I can see how it would be helpful for those with boats! Unfortunately, the update time is very much lagging, which is less helpful. I was using this to try to see whales on a recent trip and I was in the area where whales were located, but didn’t see the updates to this app until hours later despite checking it and refreshing it frequently. Good, could be great with some updates.
4 Negative User Reviews for Whale Alert
Older version was better
The new updates have made the app less user friendly as a person that enjoys seeing where whales are, when they were there, and photos of them where they were reported. Now all we see is a grey unconfirmed alert for about a day, and many times it will give error messages that data is unavailable. I think more filters for whale types and 1 day option would be useful. Please bring back the previous functionality.
Needs work
I get updates, but there is no way to actually look up the sighting in the app. It should allow the user to select the most recent sightings by location. App has potential but needs lots of work!
No alert feature
The app is called Whale Alert but there is no feature to configure alerts for your area. You can report sightings but not be alerted when others report them.
Potential but suuuper slow
The multiple layers added to this map feature makes the app run super slow. And I have the latest iPhone so pretty sure they need to do more on their end to reduce the lag time.
