The payment model destroys the game. You have to pay "gold" not only to upgrade characters and equipment but also to unlock new areas. The price for these purchases increases rapidly the further you get into the game. And the difficulty increases significantly after a few levels/areas. When you die you loose your equipment and your experience, which isn't unreasonable in itself, but troublesome given the mentioned increase in difficulty.
